Summer story for star-lovers

Title: Every soul a star

Author: Wendy Mass

Publication details: Little, Brown Books for Young Readers; 2008

ISBN: 9780316002561

What this book is about: At Moon Shadow, an isolated campground, thousands have gathered to catch a glimpse of a rare and extraordinary total eclipse of the sun. It’s also where three lives are about to be changed forever: Ally likes the simple things in life – labyrinths, star-gazing, and comet-hunting. Her home, the Moon Shadow campground, is a part of who she is, and she refuses to imagine it any other way. Popular girl, Bree is a future homecoming queen for sure. Bree wears her beauty like a suit of armor. But what is she trying to hide? Overweight and awkward, Jack is used to spending a lot of time alone. But when opportunity knocks, he finds himself in situations he never would have imagined and making friends in the most unexpected situations.

My review: This is an enchanting story by Wendy Mass, a writer I discovered quite by chance. We meet three kids whose lives change drastically over the course of one summer vacation. And it all happens on an isolated campground called Moon Shadow where thousands of people have gathered to catch a glimpse of a very rare sight: a total eclipse of the sun. What none of these three realize is that they would come together as friends and learn to value their place in the universe. Told from three unique perspectives, Wendy Mass has woven an intricate and delightful story about strangers coming together and unlikely friendships. I totally loved it!! Each character’s uniqueness is just lovely. The writing is in a good style and she brings a unique element of humor in her storytelling. An awesome read for tweens who like science!!

My rating: 5 ⭐

Additional notes: This title has won the California Young Readers Medal for Middle School/Junior High in 2012, and was nominated for the Iowa Children’s Choice Award in 2011 and the Rebecca Caudill Young Reader’s Book Award in 2012.

  1. One other issue is that if you are in a problem where you don’t have a co-signer then you may really want to try to make use of all of your educational funding options. You will find many grants and other scholarships and grants that will give you funding to assist with education expenses. Many thanks for the post.
