Sunken Forest by Des Hunt

Hi everyone, this last post for this month features a story by best-selling author Des Hunt. Ever since I started my journey into reading tween books, those written by Des Hunt have made quite an impact on me. This title impressed me from the beginning as I learned something new about the country I call home. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

An inspiring Kiwi read

What this book is about: Matt Smith has moved into a new town and has to attend a new school. After one random act of kindness and a chance encounter with a group of bad mates, some wrong choices and a raft of false accusations, Matt is forced to attend a military-style wilderness camp. It’s a nightmare, until he meets Elsa in the sunken forest… Who knew he could feel such empathy for a giant eel? And how far could that stretch when disaster threatens the lives of all? Matt is about to find out.

My review: An intriguing and exciting story of ecology, geology and good-old-fashioned middle grade drama!! Set in the New Zealand wilderness near Lake Waikaremoana, it brings some local flavour with the striking language and unforgettable characters. As his usual Des Hunt has made this an action-packed adventure read for everyone to enjoy with his usual focus on the survival of a species!! Fans of the outdoors and survival-training will also enjoy the pacing of this book!!

My rating: 4 ⭐
Additional notes: Sunken Forest was nominated for the New Zealand Children’s and Young Adults Book Awards for the Esther Glen Award for Junior Fiction in 2017.
