Brotherhood by Deepak Chopra

Hello all to this last post for June!! This post is a biography that caught my eye a few years ago, and being the generous person that I am, passed it onto my mother, who ended up recommended it to her friends before I had a chance to read it!! Yes, the book was that good. If you want to find out more, read on… (I did read it in the end!!)

Must-read biography

Title: Brotherhood: Dharma, Destiny, and the American Dream

Author: Deepak Chopra and Sanjiv Chopra

Genre: Biography

Publication details: New Harvest / Houghton Mifflin Harcourt; Boston, MA; 2013

ISBN: 9780544032101

What this book is about: In Brotherhood, Deepak and Sanjiv Chopra reveal the story of their personal struggles and triumphs as doctors, immigrants, and brothers. They were born in the ferment of liberated India after 1947, as an age-old culture was re-inventing its future. For the young, this meant looking to the West. The Chopra brothers were among the most eager and ambitious of the new generation. In the 1970’s, they each emigrated to America to make a new life. Both faced tough obstacles; while Deepak encountered resistance from Western-trained doctors over what he called ‘the mind-body connection’, Sanjiv struggled to reconcile the beliefs of his birthplace with those of his new home. Eventually each brother became convinced that America was the right place to build a life, and the Chopras went on to great achievements – Deepak as a global spiritual teacher and best-selling author, Sanjiv as a world-renowned medical expert and professor at Harvard Medical School. Brotherhood will fascinate and inspire those who believe in America’s capacity to foster achievement and reward hard work.

My review: Filled with anecdotes from their own and their father’s medical profession, the Chopra brothers have made this memoir an exceptional read. Giving it to my mother to read first was a mistake I regretted as she kept spoiling bits for me and recommended it to her friends before I could read it!! Once I started reading it, I enjoyed learning about Deepak’s journey into Transition Meditation, meeting Maharishi and forging his way into becoming the greatest spiritual leader to come out of the West!! The many accounts from their younger years leading into their adult lives make excellent reading. If you are an ardent fan of Deepak Chopra, this is the ideal memoir for you to get stuck into!!

My rating: 5 ⭐
