Hi everyone, this first post for December is a tween review. It’s funny how some titles pop out and when you look closely it’s actually one that resonates with you. Maybe I was meant to choose this particular title. Shall we find out what makes it so….

Title: Allie, first at last
Author: Angela Cervantes
Genre: Fiction – contemporary
Publication details: Scholastic Press; NY, 2016
ISBN: 9780545812238 (Hardcover)
What this book is about: Allie Velasco thinks there’s no better feeling that exists in the world than stepping to the top of a winner’s podium and hoisting a trophy high in the air. She wants to be a trailblazer, a trendsetter, a winner. But the thing is, she’s never actually won anything before. Everyone in her family is special in some way – her younger sister is a rising TV star; her brother is a soccer prodigy; her great-grandfather is a Congressional Medal of Honor winner. With a family like that, Allie knows she has to make her mark or risk being left behind. She’s determined to add a shiny medal, blue ribbon, or beautiful trophy to her family’s award shelf. When a prestigious school contest is announced, Allie has the perfect opportunity to take first – at last. There’s one small snag, her biggest competition is also her ex-best friend – or is she destined to lose it all?
My review: The perfect blend of family to friend drama in this delightful story!! I liked everything about it: the writing, plot, characters, and even pets!! One of the most impressive of this was the fact that the Velasco’s were a high achieving Latin American family who enabled and inspired others. I really liked that diverse element about it. This is an awesome read for all ages to enjoy!!
My rating: 5 ⭐
