What this book is about: Forbidden to leave her island, Isabella dreams of the faraway lands her father once mapped. When her best friend disappears, she’s determined to be part of the search party. Guided by an ancient map and her knowledge of the stars, Isabella navigates the island’s dangerous Forgotten Territories. But beneath the dry rivers and dread forests, a fiery myth is stirring from its sleep…
My review: This enchanting read is actually the author’s debut novel. Full of myths and legends, we’re taken on a wild journey across the mythical island of Joya with Isabella as she races against the evil forces to rescue her friend. A lovely story of loyalty, family and friendship. Filled with fantastical characters, it takes you to another place in time all together. Being who I am, I fell in love with the book as I encountered maps illustrated throughout the pages. Isabella was a character that readers will find themselves relating to quite well, and I really enjoyed getting to know her and following her adventure. I’m quite pleased that Hargrave nabbed awards for this amazing piece of work!!
My rating: 4 ⭐
Additional notes: This novel was awarded the British Book Award for Children’s Book of the Year and the Waterstones Children’s Book prize for Overall and Younger Fiction in 2017
