What this book is about: Twelve-year-old Lizzie Durango has always had a zoo to call home. Her dad is the head zookeeper at a California wildlife park named after famous naturalist John Muir, and Lizzie has grown up bottle-feeding baby llamas and handling boa constrictors. One afternoon while roaming the zoo grounds, she bumps into Tyler Briggs, a runaway who has been hiding out at the zoo and noticing strange happenings after dark. The two become friends and are soon drawn into a mystery that involves dying wolves, a cursed canyon, and the legend of John Muir’s lost cabin. Little do they know their alliance will take them deep into Yosemite National Park on a high-stakes adventure that will put their lives in peril.
My review: A lovely read!! I like stories that have some true historical account as inspiration. The description of the various animals and the inner workings of the zoo was very vivid and colourful, almost bringing them alive from the pages. Elise Broach created an awesome duo in the characters of Lizzie and Tyler. Along with their courage and determination to help the wolves, we read of some hefty themes such as conservation and the consequences of breaking important rules. If you are into the great outdoors and conservation this is definitely the read for you!
