Hi everyone, this week’s post takes us to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula where we meet a young girl and her mother. To be honest, even though the loss of her father is strong here, this story has a bit of everything your typical middle-grader might go through. Have a read, see if you and tween like it…

What this book is about: After the death of her father, twelve-year-old Wren finds her life thrown into upheaval. Her mother won’t talk about their loss, and Wren can’t understand why. And when she packs up the car and forces Wren to leave the only home she’s ever known, the divide between the two grows deeper still. As she and her mother settle on Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and work to build a new life, Wren must learn to cope with her grief and discover the person she’s meant to be without her father by her side.
My review: A gorgeous story!! Of families and friends, grief and loss, middle school and all the dramas, of conservation and protecting our environment and history, all while finding what the meaning of home and life is all about. I really enjoyed the amazing writing and imagery used here!! I loved the inclusion of the public librarian and the role she plays. The subtle way Monika Schröder introduces young readers who have to deal with adult problems is amazing!! This is a really good story; quite sad but a happy ending!
