Strong women and mighty girls in my life

Hi everyone, my post this week is a personal essay about the mighty girls and strong women in my life. I’m going to try my best to stick to some semblance of structure but please forgive me if I veer off on a tangent; I seem to do that quite a bit. 

Here goes…

When I think about mighty girls my thoughts always go to my three nieces. Both my sister and brother have young girls who in the last eight years have brought so much laughter and joy to our lives. Already I’m seeing their different personalities emerge and I’m amazed at how smart they are. I find that these young girls are smarter, sweeter, and heaps more kinder than I was at that age!! Aside from these immediate nieces, my cousin’s daughters – of whom I have a fair few who are much older – have all grown up and are even working now! I’ve got some graduates in the field of medicine and law!! When I think of these cousins I feel quite proud that they’re my family. Given the support, love and encouragement, I know my little nieces will also follow their dreams and reach for the stars. I’m especially glad that they live in a world now where they can explore and venture forth to achieve anything!! I find myself learning so many new things as I see the world through their eyes!!

When it comes to strong women I can’t think of anyone stronger than both my sister and sister-in-law. The one thing they both have in common, other than their kind nature, is their ability to put my brother in his place!! All jokes aside, these two have been such a strength to our family over the years. My sister-in-law is by far one of the most amazing women I’ve met so far. Deftly juggling the demands of her job, taking care of the children, and my brother, all the while feeding everyone and keeping house, she still has a smile on her face at the end of the day. We’re ever so lucky to have her in our lives and I know her daughters will one day grow up to be as strong as their mummy!! My sister is quite different from my sister-in-law. Slightly older with a drive and resolve that’s as strong as steel, she’s a force to be reckoned with. If it hadn’t been for her literally pushing me to try for a library job almost two decades ago, I wouldn’t be where I am right now. To that, I can only say the biggest Thank You!! Although younger than me I can truly say she’s inspired me the most with the dizzying heights she has achieved in both her career and spiritual life. Both of these strong women have supported me during tough times and helped me achieve many of my goals!! The most important goal; being an awesome aunt to their kids!! 

My grandmothers would be considered strong women who inspired me from my younger days. If it wasn’t for their lessons on religion, family and our heritage, I wouldn’t be the person I am now. My mother’s mum did try to teach me knitting once when I was about eight or so but being the kid I was, I got distracted and abandoned it. Despite that I did learn so much more from them both and I’m ever so grateful for the years I had with them. If they were alive today, they would both be over a hundred years old!! 

My teachers, aunts and cousins have all had a huge impact on my life!! A couple of my aunts were teachers and at one point helped me with my studies!! Although maths wasn’t my strongest subject I’d like to say their help didn’t go to waste, they truly were amazing maths teachers!! I’m truly blessed to have this group of inspiring women in my life!!

Although I’ve left my mother for last, it’s only because I needed to get all my thoughts together. She is by far the most influential and strongest woman I have met. Living with my father, travelling from continent to continent and bringing up three children hasn’t been easy. Her life has been challenging to say the least. Despite everything our family has been through, she’s the foundation our lives were built on. For her support, encouragement, love and bubbly nature, I have the utmost gratitude. The cutest thing about my mother is how excited she still gets over the smallest thing!! The other day we set her up with a Fitbit to track her steps and she’s now addicted to it!! I’m so glad for the role she plays in my life and in the lives of her grandkids!! The lessons of humility, loyalty, and love she’s imparted on me are ones I know I will continue well into my years and try my best to pay forward to my nieces. 

So there you have a few thoughts on the mighty girls and strong women in my life. I know I haven’t shared any pictures of my female relatives but they’re all scattered across the globe and finding them would be quite a task!! I hope you all enjoy this snippet into my life.
