Once upon a time a New Year began…

Hi and welcome friends to January 2023!! This month my brother and I celebrate another birthday together and become ever so slightly older!! Summer has finally arrived in full swing and has brought hope for a pleasurable New Year. This month’s theme favours those of you who enjoy fantasy reads. To find out more you will have to press the button below…

When it comes to popular movies and TV series, no matter the genre, my nieces are the ones who help me stay current. Over the last few weeks they’ve introduced me to the Disney movie Disenchanted which got me thinking of the role fairy tales play in our reading journeys. I grew up reading the traditional versions of these and decided to do some research into them. What I found was quite fascinating!

When it comes to fairy tales, the most popular is a retelling of a classic in a historical/fantasy context. Then there’s the contemporary/fantasy blend type of story where a group of kids from modern day gets stuck inside the pages of fairy tales. One of my faves are those different versions of similar tales from other parts of the world. The ones I’ve included are mostly from Scandinavian folklore. Then there’s the teen versions, both in fantasy format and a contemporary adaptation. There are heaps more out there. This month’s blog posts will vary from booklists, review posts, author posts and even a discussion post.

I hope you enjoy these selections for this month and let me know what you think. If you have selections you think I should read, I’d love to hear from you.

Stay safe and keep reading
