Food and your gut explained

Hi everyone, this first week of July we’ll be enjoying a book I picked up not too long ago. I think I mentioned a book that my mum couldn’t put down, Eat to beat disease. She would recite bits from this book and keep going on about the way food acts inside the body and I would reply to her about this particular book I had read. We would have a healthy argument on whose was better. Why not press the button below to see if my choice was better than hers?

cover image has six-grid with images of people either sleeping or drinking. one person has image of digestive tract in orange. middle box in yellow with grey letters reading Folloe your gut. grey box along bottom reads Rob Knight with Brendan Buhler.
An interesting read

Title: Follow the gut: The enormous impact of tiny microbes

Author: Rob Knight with Brendan Buhler

Genre: Non Fiction – Microbiology

Publication details: TED Books, Simon & Schuster, NY, 2015

ISBN: 9781476784748

What this book is about: Microbes, are they good for your body? In just the last few years, scientists have shown how the microscopic life within our bodies – particularly within our intestines – has an astonishing impact on our lives. Your health, mood, sleep patterns, eating preferences – even your likelihood of getting bitten by mosquitos – can be traced in part to the tiny creatures that live on and inside of us. In Follow Your Gut, scientist Rob Knight pairs up with  Brendan Buhler, an award-winning science journalist, to explain – with good humour and examples – why these new findings matter to everyone. They lead a detailed tour of the previously unseen world inside our bodies, calling out the diseases and conditions believed to be most directly impacted by them. With a practical eye toward deeper knowledge and better decisions, they also explore the known effects of antibiotics, probiotics, diet choice, and even birthing methods on our children’s life-long health. Ultimately, this pioneering book explains how to learn about your own microbiome and take steps toward understanding and improving your health, using the latest research as a guide.

My review: What an amazing and inspirational read!! Structured within the signature small-sized TED books, this sure packed a punch with the content inside. Having a basic understanding of the microorganisms inside our body, I found this read easy to understand how they functioned within the gut and the role they play in the diseases and conditions that ail us as humans. I think Knight and Butler even gave me an explanation of how my rheumatoid arthritis could have started!! The images included within the pages made understanding the content much easier for a visual learner like me!! There are times I wish books like these had been around when I was in high school!!
