Title: We Are Giants
Author: Amber Lee Dodd
Genre: Fiction – Contemporary
Publication details: Quercus Children’s Books; London, 2016
ISBN: 9781681444093 (Hardcover)
What this book is about: This is a novel about a girl whose mum has dwarfism. Sydney knows that her mom, Amy, is the best in the world – even if she’s a bit different from the other kids’ parents. The way Amy explains it is that when she was a girl she reached 48 inches in height and stopped growing right there. It’s the perfect height for many things in Sydney’s opinion, but small enough to be special. Plus, Sydney’s big sister Jade is always around to help out with the stuff on the highest shelves. Although Sydney’s dad died when she was five, she’s never felt alone or that there isn’t any love to go around. Their world is thrust into a new direction when the family are forced to move to another neighbourhood and life starts to become a bit more difficult. Both Sydney and Jade have to get used to new routines, make new friends, and deal with a different set of bullies at school. And then there’s the whole business of growing up, which Sydney is reluctant to as it means she will be getting taller than mum.
My review: What a lovely story!! I never knew that much about dwarfism until I read this book. Our young heroine Sydney has her life turned upside down when her mum Amy moves her and her sister Jade to Portsmouth from London. Life in Portsmouth is different; Mum gets a job in an office, Jade is mean and moody, but despite the new friend in Bobby, Sydney still wants to go back home, back to her old life. So when the chance to win a furniture-making competition comes, her mum enters and the results are an interesting twist!! Told in Sydney’s voice, we see the story take us on a very moving and touching journey!! A great read for all ages!
