Hi friends, this week I’m bringing you an adult novel I read sometime last year and fell head over heels in love with!! It had almost everything I enjoy in an historical read: friendship, loyalty, adventure, and most of all, letters!! So, if this short blurb has piqued your interest, then why not press the button below and read on…

Title: Love & Saffron: A Novel of Friendship, Food & Love
Author: Kim Faye
Genre: Fiction – Historical
Publication details: Two Roads; UK, 2022
ISBN: 9781529395082 (Hardcover)
What this book is about: When Joan Bergstrom sends a fan letter with some saffron to Imogen Fortier, a life-changing friendship by correspondence begins. Joan lives in Los Angeles and is just starting out as a writer for the newspaper food pages. Imogen lives on Camano Island, writing a monthly column for a Pacific North West magazine, and while she can dig for clams, she’s never tasted fresh garlic – exotic fare in the Northwest of 1960’s America. Joan and Immy’s letters bridge the generation gap as well as the miles that separate them, as their shared experiences blossom into the deepest of friendships. Set in a gentler and kinder time, Love & Saffron is a tender gem of a novel that reminds us that food and friendship sustains us all.
My review: A lovely historical epistolary read!! I really loved how the two women’s characters and each of their stories are revealed one letter at a time. You get a chance to see what life was like back in the 60’s for both generations of women, one starting out their career and the other enjoying her golden years. I enjoyed the inclusion of recipes and descriptions of 1960’s lifestyle. It made me yearn for those years even though I’m a 70’s baby!! After reading this I wished I had a friend like Immy who I could share letters with. If you’re like me and enjoyed 84, Charing Cross Road, you will truly love this read!!
