The Murk by Robert Lettrick

Hi all, this week’s post is about a sibling story I found by sheer chance. They say not to ‘judge a book by it’s cover,’ but I did. And after reading it, I was proven wrong, for what I thought was just another adventure story, this one reads more like a Hitchcock thriller!! So, horror fans, if you thought I had let the genre slide away, think again, and continue reading below…if you dare!

What this book is about: Deep in the dark heart of the Okefenokee Swamp in Florida, grows a rare and beautiful flower with a power unlike any other. Although many have tried to claim it for their own, no one has lived to tell the tale. But fourteen-year-old Piper Canfield is desperate, and this flower may be her only chance to keep a promise she made a long time ago. Accompanied by her little brother, Creeper, her friend Tad, and two local guides, Piper embarks on a quest of a lifetime. But there’s a deadly predator lurking unseen in the black water, one nearly as old as the Oke itself. Some say it’s a monster. Others say an evil spirit. The truth is far more terrifying. Piper’s task is simple: find the flower… or die trying.

My review: To say this book gave me nightmares would be an understatement: I had night-stallions!! It gripped me by my shirt and kept me awake all night long! Yes, I read it at night, my first mistake!! Fans of horror tales will like this one. It has everything you look for in a good horror read; blood, guts, and gore!! And some!! Despite all this I think this sibling story was really well written with a detailed plot and the characters are extremely likeable. The relationship between Piper and her brother is one I actually admired. You can’t help cheering them on in their adventure to get out of the swamp…alive! Let me know if you agree or not!!

My rating: 4 ⭐
